Xiaomi EREVs Extend Oil Changes to Three Years

Xiaomi’s SkyNomad sub-brand says its N70 and N90 extended-range electric crossovers will require oil changes far less frequently than conventional gasoline or hybrid vehicles. Both models use a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as a range extender and are designed to complete significant portions of their journeys using electric power.

The servicing plan published on SkyNomad’s Weibo account calls for the first oil change at the end of the vehicle’s first year or after 10,000 kilometers of travel. Following that initial service, Xiaomi recommends oil changes and maintenance every three years or 30,000 kilometers traveled using the gasoline engine.

Longer intervals for range-extender engines

The schedule is similar to the interval used by Li Auto for its L8 and L9 extended-range electric crossovers. Li Auto also recommends servicing every three years or 30,000 kilometers, showing how some manufacturers are seeking to reduce the maintenance difference between EREVs and fully electric vehicles.

EREVs combine an electric drivetrain with a gasoline engine that generates additional energy when needed. Unlike a conventional non-plug-in hybrid, these vehicles can complete substantial journeys without switching on the engine. When owners charge regularly and rely mainly on electric operation, the range-extender engine may accumulate relatively little running time. Under those conditions, the maintenance schedule’s time limit may be reached before its distance limit.

That operating pattern helps explain why the intervals can be longer than those commonly associated with gasoline and hybrid vehicles, which the source says typically require oil changes every 3,000 to 10,000 miles. Reduced engine use does not eliminate the need for maintenance, but it can change how quickly the oil and other engine components are exposed to regular operating wear.

Earlier examples and technical questions

The Chevrolet Volt provided an earlier example of how limited engine use can affect servicing. A 2015 Volt could enter a maintenance mode after extended periods of electric driving, starting its engine to consume aging fuel, circulate oil and reduce moisture buildup. Its oil-life monitoring system could account for use and mileage, allowing up to two years of engine-free or engine-reduced driving before requesting an oil change.

Xiaomi has not fully explained how it achieved the longer interval. The source notes that Li Auto made internal changes to its range-extender engine to reduce oil oxidation and moisture contamination while also using oil developed with Shell. A separate report cited by the source says Xiaomi has also partnered with Shell for a special low-viscosity oil, although the complete engineering basis for the SkyNomad schedule was not detailed.

The N70 and N90 are positioned as family-oriented alternatives to Xiaomi’s sportier SU7 and YU7 models. Their servicing plan indicates that adding a gasoline range extender does not necessarily result in the same oil-change frequency associated with conventional combustion vehicles when the engine is used intermittently.

Other EREVs mentioned as coming to the U.S. market include Scout’s Traveler and Terra. Scout has not announced exact servicing intervals. A company representative said longer maintenance cycles are among the reasons the brand is interested in its EV and EREV products, but specific guidance will not be available until the vehicles move closer to launch.
