Volkswagen ID. Polo debuts with 282-mile range

04 May 2026

Volkswagen has officially revealed the production version of the ID. Polo, an all-electric subcompact hatchback aimed directly at Europe’s fast-growing affordable EV market. With a starting price of €24,995 and a maximum WLTP range of 282 miles, the new model is positioned as a key rival to the Renault 5, Hyundai Inster, Kia EV3 and BYD Dolphin Surf.

Volkswagen ID. Polo targets the affordable EV segment

The new Volkswagen ID. Polo closely follows the design direction previewed by the ID. 2all concept shown in 2023. It arrives as one of the brand’s most important electric models for Europe, where compact urban hatchbacks remain highly relevant.

Unlike larger electric SUVs, the ID. Polo has been designed primarily for city and daily use. Still, its 282-mile WLTP range with the larger battery gives it enough capability for longer journeys when needed.

Two battery options and up to 222 hp

At launch, the ID. Polo will be available with two battery capacities and three power outputs. The entry-level version uses a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery paired with a 114 hp electric motor. The same battery can also be combined with a more powerful 133 hp motor.

Higher trim levels receive a 52 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery and a 208 hp electric motor. Volkswagen will also add a sportier ID. Polo GTI next year, using the same 52 kWh battery but increasing output to 222 hp.

Charging, range and efficiency

The 37 kWh LFP battery supports DC fast charging at up to 90 kW, allowing a 10-to-80 percent charge in around 27 minutes. Volkswagen says this version can travel up to 204 miles on a full charge.

The larger 52 kWh NMC battery can charge at up to 105 kW and complete the same 10-to-80 percent charging session in around 24 minutes. Both versions come with 11 kW AC charging as standard.

Volkswagen says the battery packs are assembled using a cell-to-pack method, removing traditional battery modules to help reduce weight and improve packaging efficiency.

Practical cabin with real buttons

The ID. Polo comes exclusively with four doors, five seats and front-wheel drive. Standard equipment includes vehicle-to-load functionality, DC fast charging, LED headlights, automatic air conditioning and a redesigned cabin with two screens.

One of the most notable interior changes is Volkswagen’s return to physical controls. The unpopular two-stage capacitive window buttons used in some earlier ID. models have been replaced by conventional buttons for all four electric windows.

The Style trim adds LED matrix headlights, an illuminated LED strip, 3D LED taillights, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control and a digital key that lets owners use a smartphone instead of a traditional key.

Optional comfort features include massage seats

Optional equipment includes a Harman Kardon audio system, a large panoramic glass roof and massaging front seats. Volkswagen claims the massage seat option is a first for this segment.

Dimensions and luggage capacity

The Volkswagen ID. Polo measures 4,053 mm long, 1,816 mm wide and 1,530 mm tall, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase. Depending on specification, minimum weight ranges from 1,568 kg to 1,576 kg.

The boot offers 441 liters of cargo capacity with the rear seats in place. Folding the rear seats expands luggage space to 1,249 liters. Volkswagen will also offer an optional tow hook with a maximum towing capacity of 1,200 kg.

Volkswagen ID. Polo orders begin in Europe

Volkswagen will open European order books for the ID. Polo at the end of April. With competitive pricing, useful range, fast charging and more practical interior controls, the ID. Polo is expected to play a major role in Volkswagen’s push for more accessible electric cars in Europe.
