Volkswagen ID. Buzz European Update Brings More Power and Real Buttons

25 Apr 2026

Volkswagen has refreshed the ID. Buzz for Europe and the UK, introducing key upgrades in power, technology, and interior ergonomics. Notably, these improvements will not be available to American buyers for the 2026 model year, as the North American market will skip this update entirely.

The highlight of this update is the arrival of the ID. Buzz Pro 4Motion, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that delivers 335 hp (250 kW). This power output was previously offered only in the higher-performance GTX model. Customers can choose between a 79 kWh battery for the short-wheelbase version and an 86 kWh unit for the long-wheelbase model, providing more flexibility in range and use cases.

Technical Upgrades and Performance

The switch to all-wheel drive not only enhances traction but also increases towing capacity. The standard model can now tow up to 1,800 kg, a 600 kg improvement over its rear-wheel-drive predecessor. The long-wheelbase version, due to its added weight, sees maximum towing set at 1,600 kg. These changes position the ID. Buzz as a more practical choice for families and businesses needing extra capability from their EV.

Interior Improvements and Technology

Volkswagen listened to early feedback about the ID. Buzz’s cabin ergonomics. The 2026 update introduces the Innovision infotainment system, which features streamlined menus and a new App Store for entertainment, charging, and navigation services. A major usability improvement comes in the form of physical steering wheel buttons, replacing the much-criticized touch-sensitive controls. However, touch sliders beneath the central screen remain, continuing to divide opinion among users.

Additional Features and Practicality

The updated ID. Buzz now supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to power external devices such as e-bikes and camping equipment via a dedicated adapter. One-pedal driving is also new, utilizing regenerative braking to bring the vehicle to a complete halt. Safety sees a boost with the optional Connected Travel Assist system, which now includes traffic light recognition.

Market Availability

European and UK customers will see the new ID. Buzz in showrooms by summer. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed if or when these updates will reach the US market, but speculation points to the 2027 model year as a possibility for North America.

Editorial Comment

Volkswagen’s decision to address customer criticisms with physical controls and enhance the ID. Buzz’s practical capabilities shows a willingness to adapt to user needs. The power boost and AWD make the van more versatile for a broader range of buyers. However, withholding these improvements from the US market, at least for now, may frustrate American consumers who were among the earliest adopters. The blend of new technology and classic usability could make the ID. Buzz a more compelling proposition in Europe, especially as competition in the electric van space intensifies. If these changes reach North America by 2027, Volkswagen will likely find a receptive audience eager for these updates. Until then, the European version sets a new benchmark for electric multi-purpose vehicles in its segment.
