Tesla Cybertruck Hits 100000 Miles on Lyft Duty Before Major Repair Bill

An owner in Nashville has driven his Tesla Cybertruck more than 100,000 miles as a Lyft driver, highlighting both the financial benefits and challenges of high-mileage electric vehicle use. While daily savings on charging have been significant compared to traditional trucks, a single out-of-warranty repair has dramatically impacted the overall cost equation.

The driver, using the handle LyftDr1ver on CybertruckOwnersClub, reports spending more than seven hours daily behind the wheel. Thanks to the low cost of electricity, his average charging expense is about $12 per day, or approximately $350 per month—well below what most drivers pay for gasoline or diesel. Passengers have responded positively to the Cybertruck’s spacious interior, panoramic roof, comfortable ride, and impressive sound system. The truck bed’s practicality has also been a key advantage, especially for rideshare work involving luggage or larger cargo.

Operational Experience and Daily Use

Despite the Cybertruck’s imposing size, the driver notes it is surprisingly manageable in heavy city traffic, crediting Tesla’s steer-by-wire system for much of the ease. However, as an early production model, the vehicle has exhibited several quality issues. Problems such as a leaking tonneau cover, persistent suspension noise, an overheating wireless charger, and premature tire wear (requiring replacement at 40,000 miles) have been ongoing concerns. Battery degradation is also noticeable, with maximum range now at about 299 miles per charge.

Cost of Repairs and Warranty Limitations

The most significant financial setback came at around 60,000 miles, when a failure in the power conversion system led to a $7,200 repair bill. Since the vehicle was out of warranty, the full cost fell to the owner. This expense quickly offset the savings achieved through lower charging costs. Nevertheless, the owner points out that similarly high repair costs are not uncommon for high-mileage vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.

Long-Term Outlook and Owner Sentiment

Despite these challenges, the owner maintains that the Cybertruck is still the most practical vehicle for his line of work. He hopes the truck will remain reliable and is aiming to reach one million miles on the odometer. The experience highlights both the promise and pitfalls of early adoption, especially for those relying on electric vehicles for intensive commercial use.
