Nissan has introduced the new Terrano PHEV concept at the Beijing Auto Show, positioning it between the larger Patrol and the X-Trail (Rogue in the US). This marks the return of the Terrano nameplate, now in a completely different segment and form. Nissan confirmed that a production version will reach select global markets within the next year.
Based on a body-on-frame platform, the Terrano PHEV concept shares its underpinnings with a Nissan pickup produced exclusively for China in partnership with Dongfeng. The powertrain is anticipated to feature a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 429 hp (320 kW) and 800 Nm of torque. This configuration suggests strong off-road and towing capabilities, aiming to rival established models like the Toyota Land Cruiser.
Design-wise, the Terrano PHEV concept stands out with a robust and purposeful stance. The front end is equipped with LED headlights, an illuminated Nissan logo, and a prominent skid plate. Off-road functionality is highlighted by tow hooks, rock sliders, roof rails, squared black wheel arches, and additional off-road lighting. At the rear, a spare wheel carrier is mounted behind a substantial support bar, reinforcing its adventurous character.
Nissan showcased a second concept, the Urban SUV PHEV, at the same event. While details are limited, this model is targeted at younger Chinese buyers and features a sleek design, digital wing mirrors, flush door handles, and distinctive LED lighting. However, the production focus remains on the Terrano PHEV, which will be available outside China as well.
With the Terrano PHEV, Nissan is making a calculated move to address the growing demand for electrified off-road vehicles. The combination of plug-in hybrid technology and genuine off-road hardware positions it as a competitive option against traditional heavyweights in the segment. As electrification trends continue to evolve, models like the Terrano PHEV will be closely watched for their ability to balance performance, efficiency, and practicality in diverse global markets.
