Mitsuoka has unveiled the M55 RS, a limited-edition, manual-transmission hatchback based on the Honda Civic RS, for the Japanese market. The model stands out with its retro-inspired design and will see production limited to just 55 units in the 2026 model year.
The M55 RS continues Mitsuoka’s tradition of transforming mainstream Japanese vehicles with distinctive styling cues. The car’s exterior is heavily influenced by classic American muscle cars such as the Dodge Challenger and draws inspiration from 1970s Japanese sports models like the “Kenmeri” Nissan Skyline. Most body panels, including the front and rear ends, are uniquely crafted, with only the doors, windows, and roofline retained from the standard Civic. Special touches for the RS include exclusive Shore Blue Metallic and Nardo Grey paint options, unique badges, and alloy wheels that distinguish it further from its predecessors.
Beneath the retro-styled bodywork, the M55 RS is powered by Honda’s 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 180 hp and paired exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. Mitsuoka has opted not to use the more performance-oriented Civic Type R as its base, instead building on the Civic RS platform. This choice maintains a balance between everyday usability and sportier driving dynamics. Unlike the standard Civic e:HEV RS, the M55 RS does not feature a hybrid system, remaining focused on traditional petrol power and analog driving engagement.
Inside, the M55 RS offers unique details such as specially embroidered RS logos on the ringed leather seats, contrasted with red stitching. The same theme extends to the leather gearknob, carbon-style trim inserts, and red accents throughout the cabin. Apart from these bespoke elements and a Mitsuoka-branded steering wheel, the dashboard, infotainment system, and switchgear are carried over from the standard Civic, ensuring familiarity for Honda enthusiasts.
The M55 RS will be offered at a price of ¥8,888,000 (approximately $55,700), making it significantly more expensive than the standard manual Honda Civic RS, which starts at ¥4,398,900 (about $27,600) in Japan. This places the M55 RS at nearly double the cost of its donor car, highlighting its exclusivity and bespoke nature. The previous M55 1st Edition, set for a larger run of 250 units, is also less expensive than the RS variant, underlining the RS’s premium positioning within Mitsuoka’s lineup. Orders for the M55 RS will open on April 24, 2026, through Mitsuoka dealers in Japan.
The Mitsuoka M55 RS represents a niche approach in the Japanese automotive market, blending nostalgia with modern engineering. While the price is considerably higher than a standard Civic RS, buyers are offered a unique design and a degree of exclusivity that is rare in this segment. The manual-only configuration appeals to driving enthusiasts, and the limited run of 55 units ensures collectability. However, the premium cost may restrict its audience to dedicated fans of retro styling and coachbuilt vehicles.
