Stuttgart’s Q1 2026 numbers landed on Wednesday and they laid out, in stark relief, exactly how difficult this year is going to be for Germany’s premium automotive sector. Mercedes-Benz Group reported earnings before interest and tax of €1.9 billion ($2.22 billion) for the first quarter — a 17% drop year-over-year. The number beat analyst consensus of €1.6 billion, but the underlying margin erosion tells a much harsher story.
The headline shock came from the sales line. In China — Mercedes’ single largest market — Q1 sales fell 27%. Mercedes attributed the weakness to “intense competition and subdued demand,” but the reality is more structural. BYD and NIO are no longer just dominating the mass-market EV segment; they are now competing directly for premium customers in territory that previously belonged to the German three.
Mercedes’ answer: a refreshed S-Class. The face-lifted flagship is positioned as the brand’s halo response in China, with company executives explicitly tying second-half momentum to its launch.
The US tariff regime added $1.2 billion in costs to Mercedes’ books in 2025, according to Bloomberg. Reuters reports that the duty pressure is projected to shave 1.5 percentage points off Mercedes’ core auto margin in 2026.
One mitigating factor in Q1: an accounting benefit linked to a tariff refund application Mercedes filed after a US Supreme Court ruling last year. That cushion was a one-off — it won’t repeat in subsequent quarters of 2026.
The adjusted operating margin for the cars division came in at 4.1%, down from 7.3% a year earlier. That sits within Mercedes’ full-year guidance of 3–5%, but well below the company’s mid-term target of 8–10%. To get there, CEO Ola Källenius is running a parallel restructuring program: redundancies, tighter cost controls, and an accelerated rollout of new vehicle architectures.
CFO Harald Wilhelm flagged that raw material costs are expected to rise further in 2026 due to the ongoing Iran conflict. Mercedes’ full-year EBIT guidance — “significantly above” 2025’s €5.8 billion — is built on the assumption the conflict resolves relatively quickly. That is an explicit geopolitical bet baked into financial guidance.
Mercedes Q1 sits in a quarter where multiple German peers are reporting structural pain: VW announcing fresh capacity cuts, BMW battling its own China softness. The German premium tier — historically the most profitable segment in global auto — is now contending with a triple bind of tariffs, Chinese domestic competition, and an EV transition that’s costlier than originally modeled.
For investors, the question is whether the S-Class refresh and the next wave of EV launches can stabilize margins by the second half. If China’s 27% Q1 decline persists, even successful product launches may not be enough to hit the year-end guidance.
