A 2007 Mazda MX-5 has been radically redesigned to closely resemble classic Aston Martin grand tourers, thanks to a comprehensive body conversion by Simpson Design in Washington State. The car, currently listed for auction, sets itself apart from typical roadsters with bespoke styling and numerous details borrowed from iconic British sports cars.

Nearly the entire exterior of the standard MX-5 has been reworked. While the original door panels remain, the rest of the body features a long hood with integrated scoop, widened mesh front grille, and faired-in headlights with clear covers reminiscent of vintage Aston Martin models. Additional touches such as Lancia Flavia-sourced door handles and authentic wire wheels further the retro appeal, while Aston Martin badging completes the transformation.

The vehicle’s paintwork features a light green finish paired with a removable hardtop, enhancing its grand tourer presence. Sixteen-inch knock-off wire wheels provide a period-correct look that complements the overall aesthetic. Despite the exterior overhaul, the MX-5’s mechanical foundation remains unchanged, with power coming from Mazda’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 166 hp and 190 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, a choice that supports the relaxed touring character of the build rather than a track-focused performance.

p>Inside, the cabin has been extensively modified to distance itself from the original MX-5’s sporty ambiance. Beige vinyl bucket seats, woodgrain trim, and a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel fitted with an Aston Martin horn button all contribute to a classic British look. The factory air conditioning and AM/FM/CD stereo have been retained, preserving some modern conveniences for daily usability.

The car currently has just 26,000 miles on the odometer and a clean service record, with bidding at Bring a Trailer already surpassing $23,500. Such a price is notable for a used NC-generation Miata, but the unique craftsmanship and attention to detail may justify the premium for collectors or enthusiasts seeking a standout vehicle.

From a market perspective, this conversion targets a niche audience who value style and exclusivity above raw power or factory originality. While purists may question the use of an automatic gearbox or the retention of the stock engine, the overall package succeeds in capturing the essence of classic grand touring. In a segment where authenticity and rarity often command high prices, this MX-5 offers an alternative route to vintage Aston Martin aesthetics without the associated costs of ownership. Looking ahead, such conversions may inspire further creativity among enthusiasts, demonstrating the flexibility of platforms like the MX-5 for ambitious custom projects.
