Jaguar has confirmed that the production version of its radical new electric grand tourer will be called the Jaguar Type 01. The name follows the Type 00 concept and is intended to mark the first model in the brand’s new all-electric era.
The Type 01 will be the road-going version of Jaguar’s next-generation electric four-door grand tourer. Its name directly follows the Type 00 concept, with Jaguar presenting the “01” designation as a symbol of the brand’s first car in a completely new chapter.
Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover said the company has reimagined the brand for a new era while taking inspiration from its past. According to Glover, the zero in the name represents a full brand reset, while the one identifies the Type 01 as the first car of that new phase.
Although the Type 01 name may sound simple, it links back to a long tradition in Jaguar history. The company has previously used the “Type” naming structure on some of its most important models, including the Le Mans-winning C-Type from 1951, the legendary E-Type, and the more recent F-Type.
By using Type 01, Jaguar is trying to connect its future electric lineup with its performance heritage, while also signaling a sharp break from its outgoing model range.
The Type 01 is especially important because Jaguar has stopped production of its previous models and shifted its focus toward this new electric grand tourer. The brand’s recent relaunch and design direction have generated strong debate, but the company appears determined to reposition itself around high-end electric vehicles.
Early prototype drives reportedly described the car as composed, stable, and still recognizably Jaguar in the way it drives. That will be crucial for a brand trying to move into a new era without losing its core identity.
The Jaguar Type 01 is expected to use a tri-motor electric powertrain producing around 1,000 hp and 959 lb-ft of torque. If those figures carry over to the final version, the new EV should deliver the kind of performance expected from a flagship electric grand tourer.
Jaguar has also taken an unusual approach to battery packaging. Instead of placing one large battery pack entirely under the floor, the company split the battery into multiple sections positioned toward the front and rear of the body. This layout allowed engineers to lower the seating position and reduce the overall height of the sedan.
The first Jaguar Type 01 prototypes are set to appear on the streets of Monaco during the Formula E race weekend. However, it remains unclear whether these vehicles will be close to production specification or related to earlier Type 00 development cars.
Jaguar plans to reveal the final, undisguised version of the Type 01 later this year. Until then, the name is official, but key details such as final specifications, pricing, range, and launch timing remain undisclosed.
