The Freelander name returns to the automotive world, this time as a standalone brand and not under the Land Rover umbrella. Unveiled at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the Freelander 8 is the first model from a joint venture between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery, aimed squarely at the new energy vehicle segment.
Design-wise, the Freelander 8 draws inspiration from the original Freelander, featuring a boxy silhouette and square headlights that nod to its predecessor. Its rear pillar design and three-quarter glass echo the first-generation three-door Freelander, while modern touches like a closed-off front grille and roof-mounted LiDAR highlight its advanced technology focus. The SUV spans about 5.1 meters in length, positioning it between Defender 110 and Defender 130 in terms of size.
The platform underpinning the Freelander 8 supports a range of powertrains, including pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extending electric configurations. Although full technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, the model is confirmed to offer three-row seating and will be equipped with CATL batteries capable of supporting 350-kW charging. Other notable features include air suspension and a rear electronic limited-slip differential, suggesting a focus on comfort and on-road dynamics as well as off-road potential.
The interior of the production model has not been fully revealed, but concept images indicated a pillar-to-pillar screen layout and a central infotainment display. The Freelander 8 also adapts to new regulatory demands in China, switching from flush door handles to a semi-enclosed design after recent changes in local law. Rear-hinged
doors seen in early concepts have given way to a more conventional B-pillar setup for production.
The Freelander 8 is not limited to the Chinese market; Jaguar Land Rover and Chery plan to introduce it to additional markets, including regions with right-hand drive. It is the first of six new SUVs slated for release over the next five years under the Freelander brand, all manufactured at a dedicated facility in Changshu and distributed through a distinct retail network separate from JLR dealerships.
Freelander’s revival as a dedicated new energy brand marks a significant strategic shift for both JLR and Chery. The model enters a highly competitive large SUV segment already crowded with electrified options. While the range-extending variant may offer a short-term point of differentiation, established manufacturers are also investing in similar technologies, making long-term success dependent on execution and market reception.
Looking at the Freelander 8’s entry, it is clear the joint venture is leveraging a well-known name to gain rapid recognition in a challenging environment. The decision to separate Freelander from the Land Rover identity could help it carve out a distinct space in the fast-evolving electric SUV market, especially in China where new brands frequently emerge. Its international rollout will test the brand’s resonance beyond its home market, especially against established global competitors. The real test will come as customers and critics experience the vehicle firsthand and assess whether Freelander can overcome the reliability perceptions of its past and meet the demands of modern SUV buyers.
