Ford’s $1 Billion Detroit Tech Hub Bets On Mobility

03 May 2026

Ford’s restored Michigan Central campus has become one of Detroit’s most important symbols of industrial renewal. Once an abandoned train station that stood empty for decades, the site is now home to Ford’s connected car and advanced electric vehicle teams, as well as more than 100 startups working on the future of mobility.

Ford Turns An Abandoned Landmark Into A Tech Campus

Michigan Central was once a powerful reminder of Detroit’s manufacturing past and later became a symbol of the city’s decline. Ford began changing that story in 2018, investing more than $1 billion to restore the historic station and develop the surrounding campus into a technology and innovation hub.

The project goes beyond architectural restoration. Ford has partnered with Newlab, an incubator focused on so-called critical technologies, to turn the former book depository next to the station into a working space for companies building physical mobility products.

Newlab Detroit Focuses On Real-World Mobility

Newlab Detroit is centered on mobility, which includes electric vehicles, autonomous systems, drones, robots and other transportation technologies. Unlike software-only startups, these companies need space, tools and real-world testing environments to build and refine physical products.

The facility offers more than 30,000 square feet of shared lab and manufacturing space. Startups can access equipment such as CNC mills, laser cutters and industrial-scale 3D printers, along with expert support to use those tools effectively. Outside the building, there is also an electrified roadbed designed for wireless EV charging tests.

Why Shared Infrastructure Matters For Startups

For mobility startups, speed can be a major advantage. Having expensive manufacturing and testing equipment in one shared location allows companies to move from design to prototype much faster than they could on their own.

One example highlighted in the source story is Civilized Cycles, which is developing an electric “Semi-Trike.” The company says the vehicle combines van-like cargo capacity with the lower carbon footprint of an e-bike. By operating inside Newlab’s ecosystem, the startup can design, prototype and refine its tube-chassis trike and trailer without leaving the building.

What Ford Gains From The Project

Ford’s investment gives the company more than a restored landmark. The Michigan Central campus may help attract engineering and technology talent to Detroit instead of sending that talent to places such as Silicon Valley or Austin. It also gives Ford early visibility into emerging ideas in autonomy, electric micromobility and advanced mobility systems.

At a time when the U.S. auto industry faces pressure from shifting EV policy and rapid technological progress in China, Michigan Central represents a different kind of response: build an ecosystem where startups, engineers and major automakers can work side by side.

A New Symbol For Detroit’s Future

The transformation of Michigan Central is significant because of what the building represents. A station once associated with abandonment is now filled with engineers, entrepreneurs and mobility companies. For Ford, the site connects the company’s automotive legacy with its future ambitions in electric, connected and autonomous transportation.

Detroit’s next chapter may not be built by one company alone. But Ford’s Michigan Central project shows how legacy automakers, startups and advanced manufacturing spaces can come together to create a new foundation for mobility innovation.
