Ford is recalling 86,543 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles in the United States because rear side quarter window trim pieces may loosen, detach and become a road hazard. The affected vehicles were built between February 17, 2023, and October 8, 2024. Ford said the defect can increase the risk of a crash if a detached trim piece strikes another vehicle.
The automaker traced the problem to a new assembly jig introduced at the supplier’s factory in Mexico. The equipment reduced the time needed to install the trim piece onto the quarter glass. According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the shorter process did not give the trim primer enough time to cure, leaving an insufficient bond between the trim and the glass.
Ford began examining the issue after noticing a rise in warranty claims for loose or detached window trim pieces in May. The claims involved Mustang Mach-E vehicles from the 2023 through 2025 model years. During its investigation, Ford found that glass supplier Saint-Gobain Mexico had started using the new assembly jig at its plant in February 2023.
The supplier changed the process in September 2024 by adding a 30-second timer to the assembly jig. Ford said the timer ensured that the primer had adequate curing time before the trim was installed. Vehicles produced before that correction and within the stated build-date range are included in the recall.
Ford is aware of 219 reports involving loose or detached trim pieces on vehicles covered by the campaign. The company said it has not received any reports of crashes or injuries connected to the defect. The recall concerns the rear side quarter glass trim, which may separate while the vehicle is being driven.
Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the rear side quarter glass trim when required. The inspection and replacement will be carried out free of charge. The Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s only passenger electric vehicle still on sale in the United States, according to the source. The recall adds another service campaign for the model after a separate action involving nearly 43,000 vehicles sold in the country.
That earlier recall covered certain 2021, 2022 and 2023 rear-wheel-drive Mustang Mach-E models. Ford said the differential pinion shaft in those vehicles could fracture because of bending fatigue, potentially leaving the vehicle stranded. The current window-trim recall is separate and does not involve the rear differential issue described in that earlier campaign.
