Dongfeng Motor has introduced its first internally developed high-power EV charger, a unit capable of delivering up to 1,500 kilowatts to a single vehicle. The state-owned Chinese automaker is presenting the charger as a direct competitor to BYD’s Flash Chargers, which are also designed for ultra-fast charging.
The new dispenser can serve two electric vehicles at the same time. When both charging cables are connected, the available output is automatically divided between the vehicles. At full capacity, the unit can supply as much as 1,500 amps at 1,000 volts. It can also reduce voltage to 150 volts, allowing it to support a broad range of battery systems.
Dongfeng states that the charger has an overall efficiency rating of 96.7%. The combination of high output and a voltage range extending from 150V to 1,000V is intended to make the system compatible with many electric vehicles currently on the market. The company did not provide a vehicle-specific charging time for the new unit.
Actual charging performance will depend on the battery system used by the connected vehicle. BYD has promoted five-minute charging stops for vehicles designed to take advantage of its Flash Chargers, but Dongfeng did not demonstrate an equivalent charging session or identify a Dongfeng model capable of sustaining the charger’s full output.
Dongfeng said the 1.5-MW charger is only the first stage of its plans. The company is developing another generation of charging equipment with integrated battery storage. According to information cited from CNEVPost in the source report, the planned systems will offer outputs ranging from 720 kW to 2.4 megawatts.
Those future chargers are being designed for both passenger vehicles and commercial electric vehicles. The source did not provide a launch date, installation target or deployment schedule for the next-generation equipment, so the timing and scale of the program remain unspecified.
The first-generation charger is also described as one of the first products in the sector to comply with China’s new national energy-efficiency standard. It received a Level 1 energy-efficiency label, which was included among the specifications reported for the unit.
Dongfeng’s announcement comes as other Chinese companies publish increasingly short charging claims. Hongqi has said an experimental battery can charge from 10% to 80% in less than four minutes and from 10% to 97% in about eight minutes. CATL has reported that its third-generation Shenxing LFP battery can move from 10% to 80% in less than four minutes and from 10% to 98% in six and a half minutes. Dongfeng has not yet released comparable charging-time results for its own charger and vehicles.
