Renault Duster

RenaultSUVMild Hybrid

Review

Since the days of preparing test articles for newspaper pages, I have rarely witnessed a model undergo such a massive identity evolution by changing brands. Rolling off the Bursa Oyak Renault production lines in Turkey and proudly wearing the Renault logo on its front grille, the new Duster has practically transformed its old "farmer's SUV" image into a miniature Land Rover Defender. With its Y-shaped signature LED headlights and recycled "Starkle" body plastics, the Duster is no longer a vehicle bought out of necessity, but for its style. It is one of those rare cars that allows you to drive clients to land or project sites in Silivri and Ispartakule without the fear of scraping the bottom, while also looking extremely stylish in the city on the way back to the office.

Looking under the hood with my service and mechanical background, we see the 1.2-liter TCe 130 horsepower mild-hybrid (mHEV) unit taking the place of those famous dCi diesel engines. The slight thrust provided by the 48V battery during takeoffs successfully masks the lifelessness of the 3-cylinder engine at low revs. The manual transmission shifts are notchy and precise; in particular, the shortened first gear in the 4x4 version creates a true climbing monster on the toughest construction site roads or muddy terrains. Moreover, this new-generation engine has completely shelved the shaky running character of the old diesels.

Inside, the philosophy of pragmatism has hit its peak. Yes, everywhere you touch is still hard plastic, but it is now much better shaped, has a solid texture, and certainly isn't an eyesore. The Y-shaped air vents and the "YouClip" accessory system (phone holder, lamp, etc.) that can be attached to various parts of the cabin are brilliant engineering intelligence. The new 10.1-inch multimedia screen does its job flawlessly with wireless Apple CarPlay. The 472-liter trunk capacity is capable of easily swallowing everything from real estate signs to weekend camping gear.

In terms of driving dynamics, a literal revolution has occurred. The old Duster was like a boat rocking in the sea through corners; thanks to the new CMF-B platform, chassis rigidity has increased incredibly, and body roll has been largely brought under control. The steering has shed the exhausting weight of the old hydraulic system and become soft as cotton. However, regarding insulation, the Duster is still a step behind its premium rivals; when you exceed 110 km/h on the highway, wind noise leaking from the C-batterylars and the hum of A/T tires echo in the cabin.

Overall, the new Renault Duster has managed to take on a modern and urban character without losing any of its off-road capabilities (especially with the 4x4 version). It is no longer chosen just because it is cheap, but because it is very cleverly designed and maintains that legendary durability. If you can tolerate the wind noise at high speeds, you are looking at the most honest, capable, and "go-anywhere" car in the Turkish market.
