Opel Mokka

OpelSUVPetrol

Review

The Mokka, the model that completely changed Opel's brand identity and introduced the "Vizor" design language to the roads for the first time, is by far one of the most stylish vehicles in the B-SUV segment. When you look at the car from the outside, you see the precision and sharpness of a mechanical luxury watch crafted by master hands. Especially with its dual-tone body and red stripe details (GS trim), it stands out like a fashion icon among other SUVs that have become mundane in traffic. While doing automotive journalism, I frequently used the concept of "design that evokes emotion"; the Mokka is exactly one of the batterylars of this concept.

Mechanically, under the hood lies the loyal worker of the Stellantis group: the 1.2-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine and EAT8 transmission duo. I memorized the behavior of this engine very well during my workshop days; since the timing belt runs in oil, it is extremely long-lasting as long as its maintenance is strictly followed. 130 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque move this compact 1295 kg body very swiftly. Urban mid-accelerations are highly satisfying, and the EAT8 transmission shifts up and down smoothly.

Inside, the integrated digital screen concept called the "Pure Panel" greets you. The screens are angled towards the driver, and the interface is certainly not hard on the eyes. Carbon fiber-look details on the console and Alcantara seats increase the premium feel. However, this magnificent exterior design comes with a very clear bill: interior volume. The Mokka's rear seats are quite tight, and because the window line is high, the rear feels claustrophobic. Likewise, the 350-liter trunk is below class standards. Seating broad-shouldered clients in the back while going to a portfolio showing in Esenyurt or Ispartakule might be a bit problematic.

In terms of driving dynamics, the Mokka feels much more "German" compared to its French platform sibling, the Peugeot 2008. The suspensions are noticeably stiffer, and the steering is heavier and more precise. As a result, the body doesn't lean at all in corners, and the car sticks to the ground like glue. While this is great news for those who love sportsty driving, one must know that on rough roads and sharp bumps, this stiffness reflects into the cabin as impacts. Regarding insulation, wind noise isolation is quite successful.

Ultimately, the Opel Mokka is not a ratito himl family man's car; it is the car for those who want to reflect their style and focus on the pleasure in the driver's seat rather than rear seat spaciousness. With its striking vizor design, trouble-free mechanical infrastructure, and German driving dynamics, it is a flawless option for those seeking a grand feeling of status in compact dimensions.
