Mercedes-Benz GLA
Review
Mercedes' entry-level crossover, the GLA, has shed its image of being a "jacked-up A-Class" through its facelift and achieved the form of a fully equipped SUV. With the new Diamond-look front grille, more muscular shoulder lines, and updated LED headlight structure, it gives a serious nod to its older brothers, the GLC and GLE, when viewed from the outside. In the hustle and bustle of city business, offering luxury and prestige in such a compact to you always makes it an attractive option; that star emblem always leaves a strong impression when you go to meetings or portfolio presentations.
Under the hood lies the 1.3-liter turbocharged M282 engine developed with the Renault-Nissan alliance. However, with the facelift, a 48V mild-hybrid system has been added to this engine. The slight jolts and hesitations experienced during takeoffs and gear shifts in older generations, which I frequently encountered during my workshop days, are now history thanks to the extra power provided by the electric motor. While 163 horsepower doesn't turn the car into a race car, it provides a smooth and agile drive in Istanbul traffic thanks to the flawless calibration of the 7G-DCT transmission.
Inside, Mercedes quality once again sets the standards. The dual 10.25-inch MBUX displays, illuminated turbine-style air vents, and the new generation steering wheel practically turn the GLA's cabin into a first-class airplane lodge. The feel of the touch surfaces and the quality of the ARTICO artificial leather used are very high. The intelligent voice assistant ("Hey Mercedes") is so advanced that being able to handle everything from climate control temperatures to ambient lights by voice is a huge practicality. However, it must be noted that the 425-liter trunk capacity is not as spacious as its platform sibling GLB or its rival, the X1.
When you hit the road, the GLA exhibits an entirely comfort-oriented character in terms of driving dynamics. The suspension system is arguably one of the best in its class at absorbing potholes and speed bumps. While this softness causes the body to lean slightly on winding roads, it never compromises driving safety. Cabin insulation is wonderful; the isolation structure that minimizes wind noise during high-speed highway driving creates premium silence inside.
To summarize, the facelifted Mercedes GLA 200 is a flawless package for those seeking prestige, comfort, and current technology in a compact to you. For users targeting quiet, stylish, and luxurious urban transportst rather than engine performance, it plays the comfort card very strongly against the BMW X1. While its price might seem high for an entry-level vehicle, that is the cost of owning that prestigious star and the smooth drive it offers.
