BYD’s Denza Z is shaping up to be one of the boldest electric performance cars from China yet. Revealed as an all-electric two-door roadster, the Denza Z promises more than 1,000 horsepower, ultra-fast charging capability and acceleration figures that put it directly in the same conversation as the long-delayed second-generation Tesla Roadster.
The Denza Z made its appearance in production form at the Beijing Auto Salon, presenting itself as a high-performance electric convertible with styling that clearly targets the exotic car segment. While the source compares some of its design cues to Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati, the Denza Z is positioned as a serious technology showcase rather than a simple design exercise.
Unlike Tesla’s second-generation Roadster, which has faced repeated delays, BYD’s Denza brand is preparing the Z for a more concrete rollout. The car is also expected to make a dynamic debut later this year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom. According to the source, BYD is unusually prioritizing Europe before its domestic Chinese market for this model.
Full technical specifications have not yet been released, but the Denza Z is expected to produce around 1,000 horsepower. BYD is also claiming a zero-to-60 mph time of under two seconds, putting the car among the fastest electric performance vehicles currently being discussed.
The Denza Z will use BYD’s advanced DiSus-M electromagnetic suspension and the company’s latest “God’s Eye” driver assistance technology. These systems are intended to give the roadster both high performance and advanced electronic control, although detailed system specifications have not yet been confirmed.
One of the Denza Z’s most important features is compatibility with BYD’s “Flash” charging technology. The source states that BYD’s Flash chargers can deliver up to 1,500 kilowatts of power, allowing extremely short top-up times of under 10 minutes.
However, BYD has not yet confirmed the Denza Z’s exact battery size or its final charging figures. More details are expected to be announced in July.
Denza says the Z will be offered in three versions: a traditional coupe, a soft-top convertible and a more focused track variant. So far, only the open-top version has been shown publicly.
The two-door model is based on the same e3 platform used by the Denza Z9GT electric wagon. According to the source, the Z will feature drift mode, tank turn functionality and automated driving capabilities. These features suggest that BYD wants the car to serve as both a performance halo model and a technology demonstrator for the Denza brand.
Pricing has not been officially confirmed, but local estimates mentioned in the source suggest the Denza Z could cost around $65,000 in China. If accurate, that would make it dramatically cheaper than luxury electric and combustion-powered grand tourers such as the Maserati GranCabrio, which starts at more than $350,000.
It remains unclear whether the Denza Z will keep that price advantage once it reaches Europe. Import costs, taxes, market positioning and equipment levels could significantly affect its final European price.
The Denza Z arrives at a time when Tesla’s second-generation Roadster remains absent from showrooms despite years of promises. BYD appears to be moving into that space with a car that combines supercar-level power, advanced suspension, high-speed charging and multiple body styles.
If the final production version delivers on its claimed performance and charging figures, the Denza Z could become one of the most important electric halo cars from China. It also shows how rapidly BYD is expanding beyond mainstream EVs into high-end performance segments traditionally dominated by European and American brands.
