BMW Speedtop Spied Testing At The Nürburgring

21 May 2026

BMW’s ultra-exclusive Speedtop has been caught testing at the Nürburgring as the coachbuilt shooting brake moves closer to production. Based on the 8-Series and expected to use M8 Competition hardware, the limited-run model is aimed at collectors, but BMW is still making sure it can handle serious high-speed testing before first deliveries begin in 2027.

BMW Speedtop Heads To The Nürburgring

Spy photographers captured the BMW Speedtop prototype lapping the German circuit under the brand’s familiar camouflage wrap. Even with the disguise, the car’s long-roof profile, slim rear lighting, small fin-style door handles and elegant shooting brake proportions remain easy to identify.

The production model stays close to the Speedtop concept shown at Villa d’Este last May. Its stretched roofline and raised center spine running from the hood toward the rear help give the car a distinctive grand touring character, while the overall shape separates it clearly from a regular 8-Series coupe.

A Coachbuilt BMW For Just 70 Buyers

The Speedtop is positioned as one of BMW’s most exclusive modern models. Production is expected to be limited to just 70 units worldwide, with prices likely to exceed €500,000, or more than $580,000 at current exchange rates.

Although most owners are unlikely to drive such a rare coachbuilt model aggressively on track, Nürburgring testing remains an important part of the development process. For BMW, the laps are not only about handling, but also durability, stability and ensuring the Speedtop behaves like a proper modern grand tourer.

M8 Competition Power Underneath

The Speedtop is based on BMW’s familiar 8-Series architecture and is expected to use the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 found in the M8 Competition. Output should be around 617 hp, sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

That hardware should give the Speedtop the performance expected from a supercar-priced BMW, even though its real-world role will likely lean more toward luxury touring and collector appeal than daily track use.

Luxury Cabin With Custom Luggage

BMW previously described the Speedtop as an exclusive three-door interpretation of a BMW Touring. The model features a two-seat cabin layout and a luggage-focused rear area designed to underline its grand touring purpose.

To match the car’s coachbuilt status, BMW also developed custom bags with Schedoni, the Italian company known for producing luggage sets for Ferrari. This detail fits the Speedtop’s positioning as a highly personal, collector-grade model rather than a conventional production car.

Deliveries Expected In 2027

First deliveries of the BMW Speedtop are expected in 2027. The source article states that none are planned for America, although its rarity and collector appeal may still attract interest from wealthy US buyers looking to import one privately.

With M8-based performance, dramatic shooting brake styling and a production run capped at only 70 examples, the BMW Speedtop is shaping up to be one of the brand’s rarest modern coachbuilt models.
