BMW i3 and iX3 Long Wheelbase Debut for China

BMW has introduced new long wheelbase versions of its i3 sedan and iX3 SUV exclusively for the Chinese market. The standout change is not only the extended length but also the adoption of traditional semi-recessed door handles, departing from the flush, pop-out handles seen on European and US models. This move addresses safety concerns after loveral incidents in China where retractable handles reportedly hindered quick exit during accidents.

The i3 Long Wheelbase and iX3 Long Wheelbase are based on BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture. Both models have been stretched to cater to the strong Chinese preference for rear seat space, although BMW has not yet disclosed the exact increase for the i3L. The iX3L offers an additional 108 mm to the wheelbase, reaching 3,005 mm, which approaches the dimensions of an X5. Despite the increase in length, BMW says the proportions have been carefully balanced to preserve the cars’ overall design.

Inside, both vehicles feature the BMW Panoramic iDrive system and a China-specific version of Operating System X. Localized technology includes navigation co-developed with Amap, AI assistance via Alibaba and DeepSeek, and compatibility with HarmonyOS NEXT, ensuring seamless integration with China’s digital infrastructure. Driver assistance systems, developed in collaboration with Momenta, have been tuned to Chinese road conditions and offer Level 2 navigation-guided support across a range of driving scenarios.

On the technical side, both models are equipped with 800-volt electrical systems and support up to 400 kW DC fast charging, matching the capability of their Western counterparts but trailing some domestic Chinese competitors such as BYD. Power figures remain consistent, with the iX3 50L xDrive delivering 463 hp and 645 Nm of torque.

BMW’s claimed range figures for these models are ambitious, with the i3 Long Wheelbase said to exceed 1,000 km and the iX3 Long Wheelbase over 900 km on the CLTC test cycle. However, real-world figures are likely to be significantly lower, as similar models in North America are rated at 400–440 miles under the EPA cycle. The focus on range and interior space reflects the unique demands of Chinese buyers, who prioritize rear comfort and extended driving capability.

The decision to revert to conventional door handles for China reflects a broader trend in vehicle safety regulation and user feedback. BMW emphasizes that the new hardware meets both local and global safety standards. With these updates, BMW aims to strengthen its position in the Chinese electric vehicle market, where customer expectations and regulatory requirements are evolving rapidly.

From an editorial perspective, BMW’s strategy with the i3 and iX3 Long Wheelbase models highlights the brand’s willingness to tailor products for regional markets. Moving away from retractable handles is a pragmatic response to safety concerns and local preferences. The inclusion of locally developed technology and enhanced rear space underscores BMW’s focus on the Chinese consumer. While the official range figures will require real-world validation, the technical advancements and targeted updates position BMW to better compete with both global and domestic rivals. How these China-only models influence future global product decisions remains to be seen, but they serve as a clear example of adaptive engineering and market-specific design in the electric vehicle sector.
