BMW 7 Series 2027 generation debuts with new technology

23 Apr 2026

BMW has introduced the seventh-generation 7 Series, marking the most comprehensive update in the model’s history. The 2027 7 Series is the brand’s first luxury vehicle to adopt the Neue Klasse platform, signalling a major shift in design, technology, and user experience that will influence future BMW models.

Variants and Powertrains

At launch, the 2027 BMW 7 Series will be available in four versions: two all-electric models, the i7 50 xDrive and i7 60 xDrive, alongside the combustion-powered 740 and 740 xDrive. Early 2027 will see the addition of the 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid, offering 483 bg, and a V8-powered M Performance variant is also in development. Production is set to begin in July 2026 at BMW’s Dingolfing plant, with simultaneous world premieres in Beijing and New York.

Interior and Technology

The interior of the new 7 Series introduces the Panoramic iDrive system, featuring a projection surface that spans the entire width of the windshield. This is complemented by a 17.9-inch Central Display and the latest BMW Operating System X. The BMW Passenger Screen, standard for the first time, gives the front passenger a 14.6-inch HD display for streaming, gaming, and entertainment, without requiring a BMW ID login. In the rear, passengers benefit from a 31.3-inch 8K touchscreen, capable of streaming content, downloading apps, and even hosting video calls with an integrated camera.

Comfort and Materials

BMW has enhanced rear comfort with the optional Executive Lounge package, offering a reclining seat with integrated leg rest, heated quilted armrest, and adjustable backrest up to 43 degrees. Material options range from standard Veganza upholstery to BMW Individual Merino Leather with cashmere accents. Crystal glass controls and open-pored wood trim further elevate tactile quality throughout the cabin.

Audio and Lighting

The 7 Series comes with a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System featuring up to 18 speakers and 575 watts. For those seeking more, the optional Diamond Surround system delivers 1,925 watts, 36 speakers, and Dolby Atmos support, with exciters in the seat backs for 4D bass sensation. Ambient lighting runs across the cockpit and rear, and the Panoramic Skylounge LED roof uses over 40 LEDs to create a quilted light pattern overhead.

Innovative Features

Automatic doors now employ radar sensors for safer and faster operation, with a new Soft Close mechanism. The flush door handles work in challenging conditions, and the digital interior mirror can switch between a traditional view and a camera feed. BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant, now integrating Amazon Alexa+ AI, debuts in Germany and the US, enabling natural, conversational interaction with vehicle systems and services.

The 2027 BMW 7 Series presents a significant leap forward in both technology and comfort, as BMW aims to set new standards in the upper luxury sedan segment. The level of digital integration, particularly for rear passengers, positions the 7 Series against established luxury rivals who have also invested heavily in in-car entertainment and convenience. With diverse powertrain options, including fully electric and plug-in hybrid, BMW continues to expand its appeal to a broader audience, while the focus on tactile quality and personalization caters to traditional luxury expectations. The direction taken with this generation will likely guide BMW’s approach to future models, especially as the industry leans further into electrification and digitalisation.
