Interest in Audi Sport’s retired race cars has surged, leading to delivery delays for collectors and enthusiasts. The brand’s “Audi Sport racing legends” program, which restores and sells former competition vehicles, now has more orders than its workshop can handle. This backlog has extended waiting times for buyers well past the 2026 racing season.
According to Audi Sport GmbH Managing Director Rolf Michl, the response to these factory-restored racers has exceeded all expectations. Each vehicle undergoes a comprehensive restoration to original standards before being delivered, ensuring that buyers receive cars ready for track use. This meticulous process is key to the program’s appeal but also contributes to the growing waitlist.
Among the most sought-after models are the Audi RS 5 DTM and the R18 e-tron quattro LMP1 prototype. In less than a year, Audi Sport has sold three RS 5 DTM cars, each featuring a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and advanced aerodynamic design. Post-2019 versions use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 610 hp, a significant departure from their road-going counterparts. Meanwhile, a 2013 R18 e-tron quattro, equipped with a mid-mounted V6 TDI engine and hybrid system, has already entered a private collection. Both models represent Audi’s engineering prowess an

The growing interest in these vehicles is partly driven by the revival of classic racing series, particularly those celebrating the DTM’s Class 1 era from 1993 to 2020. Audi has responded by making more prototypes available for private sale and ensuring these cars are restored to precise factory standards. Technical support is also provided to new owners, enabling them to use the vehicles on the track rather than relegating them to static displays.
Looking ahead, Audi Sport plans to showcase its racing history at major events in 2026, including classic races at Hockenheim, Le Mans, Nürburgring, and the Red Bull Ring. At Le Mans, the legendary R10 TDI and R18 e-tron quattro will be displayed side by side, underlining Audi’s legacy in endurance racing.
The strong demand for Audi’s retired race cars highlights a shift in collector interest toward authentic, track-ready vehicles with proven competition histories. With restoration capacity now a limiting factor, Audi faces the challenge of maintaining quality while meeting the expectations of a growing clientele. As heritage racing events gain popularity, the appeal of factory-certified ex-race cars is likely to increase further, positioning Audi Sport as a go-to source for motorsport enthusiasts seeking rare, high-performance machines.
