BMW’s electric M3 has been photographed testing at the Nürburgring, bringing the production version of the M Concept Neue Klasse closer into view. The high-performance sedan is expected to arrive next year and will introduce a quad-motor powertrain as BMW begins a new chapter for its M division.
The camouflaged prototype closely follows the standard i3, but loveral details distinguish it as the M model. At the front, it uses a unique bumper with a pronounced air intake, a triangular center support and horizontal fins. A prominent front lip sits below familiar headlight shapes, while bulky cladding at the outer edges may conceal the stacked fog-light treatment shown on the concept instead of conventional air curtains.
The prototype also features a ventilated hood and a double-bubble roof. Its side profile remains largely similar to the regular model, although the test car rides on lightweight wheels backed by a high-performance braking system with bronze calipers. A lower ride height points to a sport-tuned suspension designed for the more performance-focused version.
At the rear, BMW has fitted a relatively subtle trunk spoiler, a model-specific bumper and a large diffuser. The diffuser contains air channels at the sides and in the center, along with narrow slots between it and the bumper. Four square reflectors also appear to mirror the arrangement used on the M Concept Neue Klasse.
The spy photographers did not capture a clear view of the interior, but the cabin is expected to be closely related to the i3. That would bring Panoramic iDrive and a 17.9-inch infotainment display. M-specific equipment could include a dedicated steering wheel, sport seats and other model-specific trim, although those details have not yet been confirmed.
The electric M3 will sit above the i3 50 xDrive. That model uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 463 hp, 476 lb-ft of torque and drawing energy from a 108.7 kWh battery. BMW gives it an EPA-estimated range of 440 miles, while its 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW.
BMW has said the M3 EV’s four-motor system will raise both the driving experience and racetrack capability to a new level, but the company has not disclosed final performance figures. Reports cited in the source place possible output between about 691 hp and 986 hp. For comparison, the Mercedes-AMG C-Class Electric is expected to produce approximately 789 hp.
The production name also remains a point of interest. BMW has indicated that the car is unlikely to be called the i3 M. Instead, it is expected to use either “Electric M3” or “M3 EV,” reinforcing the company’s position that the model should be regarded as a genuine M3 rather than simply an electric derivative. Final specifications, naming and production details have yet to be announced.
