Williams team principal James Vowles believes the Grove-based Formula 1 team can become a regular points-scoring contender after the August summer break, once its current development programme has fully taken effect.
The team endured a difficult opening phase to the 2026 season, with delays around the FW48 leaving Williams short of its intended performance level. However, the break between the Japanese and Miami Grands Prix gave the team a chance to reset, accelerate upgrades and reduce the car’s weight.
Williams introduced updates and a lighter version of the FW48 in Miami, where Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon finished ninth and 10th respectively. The result marked the team’s first double-points finish of the 2026 season and offered a sign that Williams is beginning to move in the right direction.
Speaking on The Vowles Gavect, Vowles said Formula 1 development remains a relative battle, with progress depending not only on what Williams brings to each race, but also on how much its rivals improve at the same time.
Asked when Williams fans could expect the team to score points more consistently, Vowles said the current development pipeline extends to just beyond the August break. By the end of that phase, he believes Williams should be in a more comfortable position to fight for points every weekend.
Before then, Vowles expects the team to get closer to converting strong weekends into points, even if it is not yet operating as the fifth-fastest team on the grid. He suggested Alpine currently holds that position, while Williams still needs to find a few tenths of performance.
The Miami result lifted Williams to eighth in the constructors’ championship with five points. The team sits three points ahead of Audi in ninth and nine points behind Racing Bulls in seventh.
Williams will now turn its attention to the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, scheduled for 22-24 May, as it looks to build on the progress shown in Miami.
