Volkswagen is reportedly planning a flagship electric SUV to replace the aging Touareg, aiming to attract premium buyers who want high-end engineering without traditional luxury branding. The move highlights VW’s ongoing effort to balance its “people’s car” roots with ambitions in the upscale segment.
According to recent reports, Volkswagen board member Martin Sander confirmed the brand is evaluating a new model to fill the gap left by the Touareg after more than two decades. Interestingly, VW is focusing on a unique customer profile—buyers with the financial means for luxury vehicles, but who prefer to avoid the image associated with premium badges like Audi or Porsche.
This strategy isn’t entirely new. Models such as the Touareg, Phaeton, and Arteon were all designed to bridge the gap between mainstream and luxury, though none achieved major commercial success. Still, Volkswagen appears determined to refine this formula rather than abandon it.
While the project is still under consideration, early indications suggest the new flagship would be a fully electric SUV. It could ride on either the PPE or SSP platform, both of which are central to Volkswagen Group’s future EV strategy.
The PPE architecture—also expected to underpin the next-generation electric Porsche Cayenne—seems the most likely candidate. If adopted, the VW model could feature a large battery pack of around 113 kWh, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and ultra-fast charging capabilities of up to 400 kW thanks to an 800-volt electrical system.
Despite sharing advanced technology with higher-end models, Volkswagen’s version would likely sit below Porsche and Audi in terms of price and equipment. This positioning will be critical, especially as Audi prepares to expand its lineup with a large Q9 SUV and potential electric variants.
Whether this new flagship SUV will reach markets like the United States remains unclear. Its success will depend heavily on pricing strategy and its ability to appeal to buyers who want premium performance and comfort without overt luxury branding.
