Volkswagen introduced a range of new models at a media event in Beijing ahead of the Auto Show, including the Jetta X Concept—a fully electric SUV aimed at the Chinese market. The Jetta X stands out with a rumored starting price below $15,000, positioning it as one of the most affordable electric SUVs in the region.
The event also featured the unveiling of the VW ID. Aura T6 SUV and the ID. Unyx 09 sedan, both developed through local partnerships to meet the specific demands of Chinese consumers. The production version of the Audi E7X SUV, built with SAIC, was also revealed, further expanding Volkswagen Group’s electric portfolio for China.

The Jetta X Concept previews a compact SUV developed on the Compact Main Platform (CMP), engineered specifically in China. Its design is pragmatic and functional, with an emphasis on value—drawing comparisons to brands like Dacia rather than traditional Volkswagen styling. This approach follows Skoda’s withdrawal from China, positioning Jetta as the group’s affordable alternative in the market.
Production is expected to begin later this year through the FAW joint venture, with the final price anticipated to stay under ¥100,000 (around $14,700). The Jetta lineup in China is set to expand to five models by 2028, four of which will feature electrified powertrains.

The ID. Aura T6 and ID. Unyx 09 represent Volkswagen’s strategy of tailoring products for China. Both utilize the new CEA electronic architecture, developed with XPeng, offering Level 2+ driving assistance and advanced infotainment systems equipped with AI-powered intelligent assistants. The ID. Aura T6, a midsize SUV, and the ID. Unyx 09, a sedan, will both be produced through local partnerships, emphasizing rapid development cycles and integration of local technology.

The Audi E7X SUV, another highlight, joins the Chinese market as part of Volkswagen Group’s collaboration with SAIC. This fully electric SUV complements the existing E5 Sportback and underscores the group’s commitment to electrification in China.

Volkswagen plans an aggressive rollout of 20 new electric vehicles in China over the next year, as part of its “In China, for China” initiative. By 2030, the group aims to offer 50 electrified models in the country, including 30 battery electric vehicles. This strategy is built on providing state-of-the-art ADAS systems, intelligent cockpits, and AI features tailored to local preferences.
With these moves, Volkswagen is focusing on local collaboration and rapid adaptation to the Chinese automotive landscape. The company’s approach is expected to strengthen its position in the world’s largest automotive market, competing with both established brands and local newcomers.

The Jetta X Concept signals a clear shift in Volkswagen’s China strategy—prioritizing affordability and local preferences over global uniformity. The move to offer a sub-$15,000 electric SUV could make electric mobility accessible to a much wider audience, especially as price sensitivity grows in the segment. While the pragmatic design may not appeal to buyers seeking premium features, it fills a gap left by Skoda and targets practical consumers looking for basic, reliable transport. Volkswagen’s partnerships with Chinese companies like FAW and XPeng highlight a willingness to adapt quickly and integrate local technologies. Looking ahead, the success of these models will depend on execution and consumer response, but the group’s expanded electrified lineup is poised to reshape its footprint in China’s evolving market.
