Touring Superleggera is preparing an open-top version of its Ferrari 550-based V12 Veloce, giving the coachbuilt restomod a more dramatic body style while keeping the naturally aspirated V12 and open-gate manual gearbox that modern Ferrari spiders no longer offer.
The Italian coachbuilder has released a dark teaser image of the upcoming V12 Veloce Aperta, which is scheduled to debut in June. The name follows Ferrari’s own tradition of using “Aperta” for some of its most exclusive open-top models.
The teaser shows a reimagined Ferrari 550 with a targa-style layout rather than a full convertible roof. Visible details include a wraparound rear window, a B-pillar-style roll hoop, and an open cockpit. Unlike Ferrari’s original 550 Maranello, which was sold as a coupe, Touring’s new version appears to offer a partially open roof configuration.
Ferrari did build an open-top version of the 550 in period, but the limited-run 550 Barchetta was a more uncompromising roadster with minimal weather protection. Touring Superleggera’s new Aperta appears to take a different approach, using a targa-style design that could make it more usable while preserving the drama of open-air driving.
The design also differs from Ferrari’s later 575 Superamerica, which used an electrically rotating roof panel. Based on the teaser, Touring’s interpretation looks cleaner and more elegant, although the company has not yet confirmed the roof mechanism in detail.
The biggest enthusiast-focused detail is the transmission. Like the V12 Veloce coupe, the Aperta keeps an open-gate six-speed manual gearbox paired with a naturally aspirated V12 engine. That gives the car a level of analog engagement absent from Ferrari’s modern V12 Spider offerings.
The final technical specifications for the Aperta have not been confirmed, but it is expected to follow the coupe closely. The V12 Veloce coupe produces 503 hp, and the Aperta will likely use a similar output if Touring keeps the same mechanical package.
The V12 Veloce coupe, revealed in 2024, featured lightweight carbon body panels, redesigned lighting, and more sculpted coachbuilt bodywork. It also received modern Brembo brakes and adaptive TracTive suspension, allowing the classic Ferrari platform to gain sharper road manners without losing its old-school character.
Inside, Touring Superleggera updated the cabin with rich leather trim and bespoke switchgear while preserving the atmosphere of the original Ferrari 550. The Aperta is expected to follow the same philosophy, blending classic Ferrari proportions with more modern craftsmanship and usability.
Touring Superleggera planned to build only 30 examples of the V12 Veloce coupe, each priced at €690,000, or about $803,000, before the cost of a donor Ferrari 550 Maranello. For comparison, Ferrari’s new 12Cilindri coupe and Spider are listed by the source at around $466,000 and $512,000 respectively.
The Aperta is expected to be even more expensive than the coupe, given the added complexity of the open-top conversion. More details, including final specifications and pricing, are expected when Touring Superleggera reveals the car on June 26.
