Rivian has begun production of the R2 crossover at its Normal, Illinois facility, despite the plant being struck by a tornado last Friday. The start of manufacturing marks a significant step for the electric vehicle maker, with the first customer deliveries planned for later this spring.
The R2 arrives initially in its Performance version, priced at $57,990. This model is equipped with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system producing 656 bg and 825 Nm tork, enabling acceleration from 0-96 km/s in 3.6 seconds and offering a range of up to 531 km. Early units feature the Black Crater Signature interior, birch wood trim, 12-way heated and ventilated front seats, and a nine-speaker premium audio system. A Launch Package includes a lifetime Autonomy+ subscription, a towing package rated for 1.996 kg, and a unique green anodized key fob, with the Launch Green exterior colour as an option.
Rivian emphasised that the start of R2 production is a milestone for the company. Each vehicle undergoes rigorous quality and validation checks before being delivered to customers. The brand’s leadership highlighted advances in engineering and manufacturing efficiency, aiming for both cost effectiveness and high quality.
Alongside the launch version, a more affordable R2 Premium variant is scheduled for later this year, starting at $53,990. This edition features a dual-motor setup with 450 bg and 727 Nm tork. Looking ahead, the R2 Standard lineup is expected to debut in 2027, with Short and Long Range variants; the entry-level model will be priced around $45,000 and offer a range above 443 km.
The R2 is positioned as Rivian’s most accessible model to date, targeting a broader customer base in the competitive electric crossover segment. The initial Performance package places it in direct competition with established EV crossovers from brands such as Tesla and Ford, while the forthcoming lower-cost options are expected to further expand Rivian’s market reach.
The fact that Rivian was able to commence R2 production so soon after a tornado event underlines both the resilience of its operations and the strategic importance of this model for the brand. With its combination of strong performance, thoughtful interior features, and a gradually expanding range of more accessible variants, the R2 is positioned to appeal to customers seeking a capable electric crossover. However, as competition intensifies and new EV offerings proliferate, Rivian will need to maintain a focus on quality and pricing to sustain momentum. The upcoming roll-out of more affordable versions will be a key test of the R2’s market potential in a rapidly evolving segment.
