Mercedes-Benz has introduced the GLC L EV, a long-wheelbase electric SUV designed exclusively for the Chinese market. Unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, this new variant stands out with its extended length and six-seat configuration, targeting buyers seeking extra space and luxury within the midsize electric SUV segment.
The GLC L EV measures 4,950 mm in overall length with a 3,027 mm wheelbase, making it notably larger than the standard global model. Rear doors and extended quarter glass highlight the additional space, while the exterior design remains close to the standard GLC EQ, featuring star-pattern LED lights and an illuminated grille.
Inside, the GLC L EV is equipped with a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen that stretches across the dashboard. The primary update, however, is the new three-row layout, accommodating six passengers. Second-row occupants benefit from individual captain’s chairs offering heating, ventilation, and massage functions, positioning the middle row as the most comfortable in the cabin.
Under the hood, the GLC L EV launches with dual electric motors delivering 416 hp (310 kW) and 800 Nm of torque. While this is slightly less powerful than its global counterpart, it remains competitive within its class. The vehicle includes an 85.5 kWh battery pack—smaller than the international version—but Mercedes claims a CLTC range exceeding 700 km, balancing weight, packaging, and local sourcing requirements.
The GLC L EV rides on a stretched MB.EA platform and incorporates an 800V electrical architecture. Buyers opting for the Agility & Comfort Package receive Airmatic air suspension and rear-axle steering, both borrowed from the S-Class, providing enhanced ride comfort and maneuverability tailored for urban and luxury-oriented Chinese customers.
Mercedes positions the GLC L EV as a direct competitor to models like the BMW iX3 LWB, also exclusive to China. The SUV is expected to arrive in Chinese showrooms in the fourth quarter of the year, with pricing details to be announced closer to launch.
From an editorial standpoint, the GLC L EV’s focus on long-wheelbase comfort and advanced features highlights Mercedes-Benz’s strategy to address the specific preferences of Chinese consumers. The adoption of S-Class suspension technology and a tailored six-seat interior indicate a clear shift toward luxury and practicality within the segment. While its limited availability might disappoint global buyers, the model sets a new benchmark for executive electric SUVs in China. As rivals introduce similar variants, the segment is likely to see further innovation aimed at meeting the evolving demands of this key market.
