Mercedes-Benz has introduced the new fully electric C-Class, debuting first in the United States before arriving in other markets. The new C 400 4MATIC Electric is positioned as the sportiest iteration of the C-Class to date, challenging rivals in the premium electric sedan segment, especially the BMW i3 from the Neue Klasse lineup.
The electric C-Class adopts a streamlined, coupe-like silhouette that distinguishes it from its combustion-engine predecessor. With a drag coefficient of just 0.22 Cd, the model targets maximum efficiency and range. The front is marked by an illuminated grille featuring 1,050 light elements, while signature star motifs appear in both the front and rear lighting clusters. Design inspiration from recent Mercedes concepts is evident, particularly at the rear, which takes cues from the Concept GT XX.
Inside, the C 400 Electric is dominated by the optional 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, stretching across the dashboard and integrating over 1,000 LED zones with matrix backlighting. This setup creates an immersive, high-tech environment, offering separate information and entertainment functions for the driver and passenger. The interior also features ventilated, massaging seats with integrated 4D sound and an ambient lighting system that can project 162 illuminated stars on the panoramic roof. The aim is to deliver a luxury experience reminiscent of the S-Class in a more compact package.
The launch version is powered by dual electric motors producing a combined 482 hp (360 kW), enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. The 94 kWh battery offers a WLTP range of up to 762 km, while fast charging can add 202 miles (approximately 325 km) of range in ten minutes. Although BMW’s i3 claims a higher range, Mercedes positions the C 400 as a strong contender in real-world usability and charging speed.
The C-Class Electric incorporates advanced chassis technology, including optional air suspension, predictive damping based on navigation and vehicle-to-infrastructure data, and rear-axle steering with up to 4.5 degrees of movement. The tight turning circle of 11.2 metres enhances urban maneuverability, while the MB.OS platform supports over-the-air updates, AI-based voice controls, and Level 2 assisted driving via MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO.
Mercedes-Benz is launching the electric C-Class first in the US, targeting a market with growing demand for premium battery-electric sedans. Details on pricing and standard equipment are yet to be announced, as is information on the anticipated AMG tri-motor version. The C-Class Electric enters a segment with increasing competition but leverages Mercedes’ established reputation and recent technological advancements.
The introduction of the fully electric C-Class marks a significant shift in Mercedes-Benz’s strategy, pushing a core model further into the electric age. The combination of advanced digital features, strong performance figures, and a luxury-focused interior sets a new benchmark for the segment. While the BMW i3 leads in maximum range, the C-Class Electric emphasizes a more immersive in-car experience and dynamic capabilities. Its true impact will depend on final pricing and regional availability, but it sets a clear direction for future compact premium EVs from established manufacturers.
