Honda Civic eHEV RS Japan Launch

23 Apr 2026

Honda has introduced the new Civic e:HEV RS in Japan, expanding its hybrid line-up with a sportstier option. The model, which was first previewed as a prototype at the Tokyo Auto Salon, now enters showrooms with loveral design cues from the manual RS but without the traditito himl manual gearbox.

Design and Features

The Civic e:HEV RS retains the aggressive styling that defines the RS badge. Key visual elements include a pronounced front bumper, red RS badging, smoked headlights, and black exterior trim. The 18-inch alloy wheels, finished in Matte Berlina Black, are shared with higher-spec e:HEV versions. Bottomhough the model features dual exhaust outlets, these are sealed off, emphasizing its hybrid nature. Honda Access offers further customisation options such as a rear wing, ducktail spoiler, and enhanced bumper extensions for buyers wanting a more assertive appearance.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Civic e:HEV RS adopts a dark theme with red accents and contrast stitching on the leather seats and steering wheel. The most notable difference from the manual RS is the absence of a traditito himl gear shifter. In its place, Honda has integrated a button-based control system on the centre console, complemented by paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The car features Honda’s S+ Shift technology, which debuted on the Prelude and simulates gear changes through adjustments in torque delivery, engine speed, and sound. These paddles also allow for manual selection of regenerative braking levels when the S+ Shift system is not active.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the bonnet, the Civic e:HEV RS uses Honda’s self-charging hybrid system, combining a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engine with dual electric motors. The system produces a total of 181 hp (135 kW / 184 PS), offering a slight increase over the 180 hp (134 kW / 182 PS) 1.5-litre turbocharged engine found in the non-hybrid RS. Despite the transition to hybrid, Honda has maintained the RS’s sportsty chassis setup, including stiffer springs, revised dampers, and sharper steering for improved driver engagement.

Pricing and Market Position

The new Honda Civic e:HEV RS is set at ¥4,660,000 (approximately $29,200), making it the most expensive Civic variant in Japan, apart from the Type R. It commands a premium of ¥261,100 ($1,630) over its manual, non-hybrid counterpart. With this pricing, the e:HEV RS aims to attract buyers looking for an electrified option with a sportsty edge, positioned above standard Civic hybrid and petrol models.

Editorial Assessment

The introduction of the Civic e:HEV RS in Japan highlights Honda’s ongoing shift towards electrification while maintaining a focus on driving enjoyment. The adoption of the Prelude’s S+ Shift system is a practical move, helping to bridge the gap left by the absence of a manual gearbox and keeping the RS badge relevant for enthusiasts. However, the higher price tag places the e:HEV RS in a challenging position, especially as rivals increase their own hybrid offerings at competitive prices. Honda’s strategy will likely appeal to drivers who value both efficiency and the RS’s distinctive sportsty identity. As hybrid technology becomes more widespread, the market’s response to this blend of performance and electrification will be telling for future Civic variants.
