George Russell has revealed that his now-famous “T-pose” was never planned, explaining that the viral gesture began by accident during a late-night Formula 1 photoshoot before becoming part of his public image and victory celebrations.
The Mercedes Formula 1 driver said the pose came from a moment of boredom and tiredness during filming for the 2023 F1 intro. Drivers regularly take part in pre-season photo and video shoots for the championship’s broadcast materials, and Russell’s pose emerged while he was waiting for his next shot.
According to Russell, the shoot was running late into the night when he rested his hands on the sides of a wall and lowered his head. A producer noticed the position and thought it looked interesting, leading to the image that later spread widely across social media.
Russell described the moment as completely unintentional. He said it was around 11:30 at night when he put his hands up simply because he was tired and waiting. The production team then decided to capture the pose, creating what would become one of the most recognisable F1 images of that season.
Fans quickly picked up on the image and began recreating it online. The pose became a social media meme and helped add another playful element to Russell’s public persona.
After the T-pose gained attention online, Russell began using it during celebrations. One of the clearest examples came after his 2024 Austrian Grand Prix victory, when he performed the pose before climbing down from his Mercedes car.
What began as a tired pause during a photoshoot has since become a recognisable part of Russell’s Formula 1 identity, especially among fans who followed the meme from its early spread online.
Russell started the 2026 season strongly, winning the Australian Grand Prix and the Chinese sprint race. However, his early momentum was affected by bad luck and strong performances from Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
After the first four rounds, Antonelli held a 20-point advantage over Russell in the championship. That has added another layer to Mercedes’ internal battle as the season continues.
