Ford has issued a major safety recall affecting 422,613 vehicles due to a potential windshield wiper failure that could lead to reduced visibility or even detachment while driving. According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) dated March 31, the issue involves improperly secured wiper arms that may malfunction under certain conditions.
The majority of impacted vehicles are 2022–2023 Ford Super Duty trucks, accounting for over 326,000 units. The recall also includes select 2021–2023 Ford Expedition and 2021–2023 Lincoln Navigator SUVs. Since the defect is not tied to sequential VIN production, owners must verify eligibility individually through official recall lookup tools.
Ford attributes the issue to a supplier-related manufacturing defect involving the wiper arm retention plate. This component may not have been properly secured during production, potentially reducing the connection strength between the wiper arm and its mounting point. Variations in component dimensions may further weaken this connection, increasing the risk of failure.
Drivers may notice irregular or inconsistent wiping speeds as an early warning sign. In more lovere cases, the wiper arm could stop functioning entirely or detach from the vehicle, posing a serious safety hazard—especially in adverse weather conditions.
Ford has received 1,538 warranty claims related to this issue. Fortunately, no accidents, injuries, or fires have been reported in connection with the defect so far.
The solution involves replacing the faulty wiper arms with updated components that meet proper manufacturing specifications. Ford will begin notifying affected owners by mail starting April 13. In the meantime, drivers can check their vehicle status using the NHTSA recall lookup tool to determine if repairs are needed.
