Fiat’s early 2026 sales reveal a surprising trend: the discontinued Fiat 500X has outsold the brand’s only current model, the all-electric 500e. Despite being phased out after the 2023 model year, the compact SUV remains Fiat’s top seller thanks to lingering dealer inventory and slowing EV demand.
In the first quarter of 2026, Fiat sold 71 units of the 500X—just a 4% drop compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the 500e managed only 68 deliveries, marking a dramatic 85% decline from Q1 2025. This unexpected result makes the 500X, a three-year-old discontinued model, Fiat’s bestselling vehicle so far this year.
Even after production ends, unsold new vehicles often remain on dealership lots. These so-called “zombie cars” can continue selling for years, especially if dealers use them to attract showroom traffic. Stellantis brands have a history of this phenomenon, with models like the Dodge Dart and Fiat 500L still finding buyers long after discontinuation.
Currently, the Fiat lineup in the U.S. consists solely of the 500e. However, the electric hatchback faces challenges, including a relatively high starting price of $37,695 and a modest EPA-estimated range of 149 miles. These limitations, combined with a broader slowdown in EV demand, have significantly impacted sales performance.
The 500X isn’t alone. Other discontinued Stellantis models continue to generate sales in 2026. Dodge sold 45 units of the Challenger, while Jeep delivered 23 examples of the Renegade—both discontinued after 2023. Although the 500e is expected to regain the lead eventually, dwindling 500X inventory will determine how long this unusual sales story continues.
