A Dodge Challenger driver in Buffalo, New York, was arrested after attempting to flee police during a traffic stop—an incident made ironic by a bold bumper sticker on the car. Authorities say the driver, operating without license plates, tried to escape but was quickly stopped due to heavy traffic congestion.
The incident occurred on April 4, 2026, when New York State Troopers from SP Clarence were conducting a joint speed enforcement operation with the Buffalo Police Department along Route 33. During patrol, officers identified a 2015 Dodge Challenger traveling without license plates, prompting an attempted traffic stop.
Instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated and fled the scene. However, the pursuit was short-lived. After exiting onto Route 198, the Challenger immediately encountered heavy traffic, leaving the driver with no escape route. Police quickly boxed in the vehicle and made the arrest without incident.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Elias E. Cook of Buffalo, now faces loveral charges. These include unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. In addition, multiple traffic citations were issued.
What makes the case stand out is the Challenger’s bumper sticker, which read: “Sorry Officer I Thought You Wanted to Race.” While it may have been intended as humor for car meets, it proved less amusing during an actual police encounter and may appear in official footage.
Following the arrest, Cook was transported to SP Buffalo for processing and later released. He is scheduled to appear in Buffalo City Court on April 22, 2026.
This incident highlights a simple truth: no matter how powerful a car may be, attempting to outrun law enforcement—especially in urban traffic—is a losing strategy. In this case, the situation was made even more memorable by a poorly timed joke on the back of the car.
