Fang Cheng Bao, the BYD-owned brand previously known for its rugged SUVs, has made a bold move at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The brand introduced a new Formula series that includes the high-performance Formula X supercar and three low-profile electric sedans, signaling a significant shift from its traditional SUV-focused image.
The Formula X supercar is the highlight of the lineup. Evolving from the earlier Super 9 speedster concept, this two-seater features a futuristic open-air cabin, 19 functional air vents, aggressive LED lighting, and doors that open upwards. The design language shows clear alignment with Denza, another BYD brand, suggesting potential for sharing both technology and market strategy.
The Formula X relies extensively on carbon fiber, utilizing it for both body panels and a custom monocage chassis. The interior adopts a ‘battle cockpit’ layout, prioritizing driver engagement and modern aesthetics. Underneath, a tri-motor electric setup generates a combined 1,000 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque. While these figures are impressive, they are positioned below the YangWang U9 Xtreme, BYD’s current performance flagship. BYD has confirmed the Formula X is scheduled for a 2027 release in China, with no official word yet on international sales plans.
The Formula series extends beyond the supercar with three sedan variants: the Formula S, Formula S GT, and Formula SL. The Formula S directly targets competitors like the Porsche Taycan, while the S GT adopts a shooting brake body style. The Formula SL stands at the top of the range, offering a more premium approach with unique bumpers, a sculpted silhouette, and gold-finished 21-inch alloy wheels.
All three sedans share the same 800V electric platform and tri-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering up to 1,000 hp. They also feature BYD’s DiSus-M magnetic ride control for improved handling. Each model rides on a generous 3,100 mm wheelbase and measures over 5,000 mm in length, underscoring their executive segment ambitions. Market launch in China is expected by late 2026.
The new Formula lineup marks Fang Cheng Bao’s entry into performance and luxury EV segments. The expansion aims to compliment the existing Leopard SUV range, with all models sharing advanced electric underpinnings. Given BYD’s strategy of offering Denza-branded Fang Cheng Bao SUVs outside China, the new Formula sedans could also see export versions under different names in the future.
Fang Cheng Bao’s pivot from boxy SUVs to high-performance sedans and supercars is a notable evolution for the brand. The Formula X’s striking design and advanced carbon-fiber construction reflect BYD’s ambition to compete globally in the premium EV segment. The three sedan variants indicate a direct challenge to established players like Porsche Taycan, with a focus on both performance and comfort. While the horsepower and technology are impressive, the real test will come with pricing and perceived brand value, especially outside China. If Fang Cheng Bao can translate its SUV export strategy to these new models, it could become a significant contender in the international EV market. The next few years will reveal whether this shift in identity can deliver both sales and prestige beyond its home market.
