Audi A1 and Q2 discontinued as electric sportsts car confirmed

23 Apr 2026

Audi has officially ended production of its two most affordable models, the A1 and Q2, as the brand shifts focus toward electrification and higher-end vehicles. The decision clears the way for the upcoming A2 e-tron, while the company also confirmed that a new electric sportsts car is heading for production in 2027.

Entry-Level Models Exit the Line-Up

The Audi Q2, introduced in 2016 as a compact crossover, will see its production cease at the Ingolstadt factory this April. The Q2 has sold 887,231 units over roughly a decade, with initial strong demand tapering off in recent years. Its starting price in Germany was €29,000, making it a significant entry point to the Audi range below the Q3.

Meanwhile, the A1 hatchback, produced in Martorell, Spain, is also winding down. Since its launch in 2010, the A1 achieved 1,389,658 sales across two generations. The latest A1 started at €22,950 and was available in both Sportstback and Allstreet variants. Like the Q2, the A1 saw strong early sales that declined as the market evolved.

A2 e-tron to Fill the Gap

Replacing both the A1 and Q2, Audi will soon introduce the A2 e-tron, a compact electric vehicle set to debut this autumn. The A2 e-tron is expected to use the MEB+ platform also featured in the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. Battery options are anticipated to include 58 kWh and 79 kWh packs, offering a WLTP range of up to 630 km. The move aligns Audi with the broader industry trend toward electrification in the compact segment.

Electric Sportsts Car Production Confirmed

In addition to its plans for compact EVs, Audi has confirmed that an all-electric sportsts car will enter production in 2027 at the Böllinger Höfe facility. This model, previewed by the Concept C, will essentially serve as Audi’s answer to the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman, featuring a two-seat layout, retractable hardtop, and a new minimalist design approach.

Market Position and Future Outlook

The discontinuation of the A1 and Q2 marks a significant change in Audi’s product strategy, as the brand exits the entry-level market in favour of higher-value and electrified models. The A2 e-tron will be crucial in determining Audi’s competitiveness in the compact EV segment, especially as rivals also expand their electric offerings. Meanwhile, the announcement of an electric sportsts car signals Audi’s continued ambition in the performance sector, targeting enthusiasts who are looking for zero-emission bottomernatives without compromising driving dynamics.

It is notable that Audi is phasing out its most accessible vehicles just as mainstream affordability becomes a focus across the industry. This strategic shift indicates a stronger emphasis on technology, electrification, and margin rather than volume. Whether this approach will succeed in retaining brand loybottomy among younger or first-time buyers remains to be seen. The upcoming A2 e-tron and the 2027 electric sportsts car will serve as important tests for Audi’s direction in a rapidly changing market.
