AI-powered chassis systems are transforming how cars handle rough roads, with new technology now capable of predicting potholes before drivers even reach them. ZF’s latest innovation uses artificial intelligence and real-time sensor data to adjust suspension settings instantly, improving both comfort and safety.
As part of its Chassis 2.0 strategy, ZF is integrating smart hardware, software and artificial intelligence to create more adaptive vehicle dynamics. Recently unveiled at CES, the system introduces two key features: Active Noise Reduction and AI Road Sense.
AI Road Sense focuses on scanning the road ahead and preparing the vehicle for upcoming surface changes. By analyzing data in real time, it subtly adjusts suspension settings to better handle uneven surfaces, including potholes and degraded road conditions.
The concept of vehicles “reading” the road is not entirely new. Several automotive companies have explored ways to detect road conditions using onboard sensors. For example, systems have been developed to monitor weather-related changes like rain, snow or ice, as well as general road quality.
Previous projects, such as those from Honda Research Institute USA, used GPS and camera data to collect road condition information and share it with infrastructure authorities. Similarly, Nexteer Automotive and Tactile Mobility created software that measures road friction in real time and categorizes surfaces as dry, wet or icy.
Jaguar Land Rover also experimented with terrain-scanning systems using radar and ultrasonic sensors to assess whether a vehicle could safely proceed without getting stuck.
ZF’s approach takes this concept further by actively adapting the vehicle’s chassis in real time. Instead of simply informing the driver, the system continuously modifies suspension behavior to match predicted road conditions.
At the core of this technology is ZF’s Cubix chassis software. It processes data from existing vehicle sensors and dynamically adjusts damping, torque distribution and chassis settings. The result is a smoother ride and improved vehicle stability, even on unpredictable surfaces.
The system also includes Driver Behaviour Recognition, which analyzes how the driver uses controls such as steering, acceleration and braking. Based on this data, it predicts driving style and automatically adjusts comfort and performance settings to match preferences.
ZF offers the system in three configurations to suit different vehicle types. The Standard version uses existing onboard sensor data. The Advanced version adds camera-based road surface detection, while the Premium setup incorporates lidar technology to create a detailed 3D map of the road up to 25 meters ahead.
With AI now capable of predicting potholes and adapting vehicle dynamics instantly, the future of driving promises smoother journeys, enhanced safety and a significant leap toward fully intelligent mobility systems.
